Space Weather App for Windows Phone Releases 2.0

Space Weather has been out for a little under a year now and we have been continuously improving it with each iteration.  The latest release (2.0) has been redesigned for speed and content delivery.  We’ve made some major changes to the UI, most notably the new gallery view and panorama view.  You can see these when you drill down into one of the categories.  We have upgraded all of our imagery to include high-resolution images with support for pinch and zoom.  We have also brought some of the most important images forward to the main page so that you can see them at a glance.  Space Weather now supports Live Tiles too, bringing the information you need right to the Start screen of your phone.   2.0 includes many more features, fixes, and optimizations.  You can see some of them in the YouTube video demo below.  Enjoy!

Why are so many devs just using boring, bland theme-colored icons? As soon as I saw the new boring icon I unpinned SpaceWeather because I have used up my quota of the number of bland icons I’m going to allow on my home screen. Even Microsoft makes custom icons for many of their utilities because they realize WP would become very bland if everyone used theme-colored icons. At least make it an option.

Hi Keith,  Thank you for the honest feedback.  We decided to go with something simple that tries to communicate what the app is.  We were also going towards Microsoft’s Metro design principles.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metro_(design_language)   I know this doesn’t translate to “make a simple icon” but we thought we would take advantage of it while the app was still young.  The last icon was very simple for me (a space geek) to see and understand what it was relating to, but others may have struggled or not have known at all.  I’m sorry you decided to unpin it, we did add Live Tiles in this release so I hope that gives you a reason to pin it back.  We value your feedback and will take it into consideration for the next version and for the Windows 8 version.  Thanks for taking time out and for commenting.
      Thanks! Tim

Oops I didn’t notice the live tile. That helps but I also got rud of another bland icon to make room for re-pinning SpaceWeather.

As you implied that link does not say always use the theme color for the icon. Just imagine if everyone did that–that would seriously make move away from Windows Phone as it would be so bland looking. Also I have 2 Microsoft apps that don’t follow that and presumably there are more. Insider uses an orange icon and translator uses a beautiful, dynamic, always colorful icon. And of course MS games always use custom icons as well.

Double oops because I forgot to say what a great app SpaceWeather is in my first post.

        Thanks

All valid points and it will be taken into consideration for the Windows (phone) 8 version!  Thanks again!
